At Ditchling, we are passionate about reading and believe that confidence in reading ‘is one of the main resources we have for showing children what words can do.’ (Barrs and Cork, 2001). Our priority is to promote a life-long love of reading which will in turn support children on their journey to becoming confident writers and ‘allow them access to the full curriculum on offer.’ (Ofsted 2019)
Mastering Reading Skills Progression
Quality texts lie at the heart of our curriculum. We believe that ‘It is through being immersed in quality literature that children begin to realise the power of words and imagination in making stories come alive.’ (Meek, 1998). The wide variety of texts we use across each year group not only underpin children’s learning in reading, writing, speaking and listening, but enhance and underpin learning across the wider curriculum.

Please find below recommended reading books for each year group.
If you have a child who has a passion for particular authors that is fantastic but why not encourage them to look at other similar texts. Below are some ideas for ‘branching out’ into more diverse texts.

Autism Awareness Books
Browse our booklist of recommended children’s books that foster awareness and understanding of autism. Our selection of books offers a range of perspectives on neurodiversity, exploring different experiences of autism including personal accounts and experiences of supporting family and friends. Books and stories can play an important role in raising awareness and promoting understanding towards autistic individuals as well as celebrating their strengths and talents and allowing children with autism to be represented in stories written by authors with similar experiences.

Black History Books
We encourage you to discuss these topics with your children at home. Consider visiting local museums or reading together from a selection of children’s books that celebrate Black history and heritage. Below are some examples:
