Last week, Year 3 enjoyed an exciting and immersive day at Michelham Priory, bringing their history learning to life in a wonderful hands-on setting.
During their visit, the children took part in a guided exploration of the Priory and its grounds, discovering how the site has changed through different periods of history. They learned about daily life in the past, asked thoughtful questions, and enjoyed seeing real historical features up close.
The children also became archaeologists for the day. They examined a range of artefacts, discussed what these objects can tell us about people who lived long ago, and took part in practical activities to help them understand how archaeologists investigate the past. They were especially fascinated by how items found in the ground — including those from ancient burials — can reveal clues about beliefs, culture and everyday activities.
The staff leading the visit commented on the children’s excellent behaviour, curiosity and enthusiasm. It was a memorable trip that has deepened their understanding of history and sparked lots of exciting follow-up learning back in the classroom.
